Ingredients company Kemin Foods to present a new water soluble
formula of its established FloraGLO brand lutein at the upcoming
Vitafoods exhibition in Switzerland.

Manufacturer of natural antioxidant ingredients Kemin Foods is to launch its FloraGLO brand lutein in a new water soluble formula.

The new formula uses patented ClearTec Coating technology to make the lutein easily dispersible in water-based products. Kemin claims there is no clouding, no ringing and no settling when adding the ingredient, and beverages retain their optical clarity and critical stability.

The new formula can be used to add functional benefits to beverages, syrups and ophthalmic solutions.

FloraGLO Lutein with ClearTec Coating contains FloraGLO crystalline lutein and sucrose monolaurate, with 15 per cent active lutein in a dry free-flowing powder.

The formula is stable, BSE-free and non-GMO, and it does not change the taste, clarity, odour or texture of the finished products, claims Kemin.

Lutein is a carotenoid found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach. In humans, lutein from food or supplements is deposited in the macula lutea, or 'yellow spot', in the retina, and protects the sensitive cells in the retina by its antioxidant and blue light filtering capacities. Several studies have shown a positive relationship between consumption of lutein and a lower incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts.

Kemin Foods already supplies its purified lutein to a number of high profile nutritional supplement manufacturers.

Kemin scientific director Dr Suzana Silva will present a review on the health benefits of lutein, including the latest scientific developments in the field, marketing news and applied research that has been developed with FloraGLO Lutein on 14 May at 8.30 am at Vitafoods, taking place at the Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland from 13-15 May.
