Stakeholders seek review over Thai shrimps

The International Chamber of Commerce in Thailand will call on the European Union to review its safety measures on Thai chicken exports after it was notified about the EU's unofficial statement regarding the lifting of restrictions on Thai shrimps, an ICC senior executive said on Friday, reports The Nation.

The International Chamber of Commerce in Thailand will call on the European Union to review its safety measures on Thai chicken exports after it was notified about the EU's unofficial statement regarding the lifting of restrictions on Thai shrimps, an ICC senior executive said on Friday, reports The Nation.

The report continues that following the ICC's protest against the EU's stringent screening methods imposed on Thai food products, the EU recently sent "a positive signal" to "soften" its stance with regard to its policy towards Thai shrimp exports, said Kiat Sittheeamorn, chairman of ICC (Thailand).

The ICC has heavily criticised the EU rules as being a serious and unfair threat to trade. Currently, Thai chicken exports to the EU are under a quality-certification programme. The ICC estimated that the result of the EU's screening of all Thai shrimp containers was an overall drop of over 40 per cent in agricultural products last year.

The ICC (Thailand) groups together the Thailand National Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industries and Banking, which in turn is comprised of the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Federation of Thai Industries and the Thai Bankers' Association.
