At the inaugural ASDA Awards ceremony for outstanding supplier performance, the award for the Most Innovative Fresh Packaging was won by Hoppers Farmhouse Bakery for its ovenable tray, packaging in-store baked mince pies.

UK Packaging supplier DS Smith Packaging pioneered the use of CartonFlute Lite as an ovenable material and, using a specifically formulated combination of inks and varnishes to protect the product throughout its life-cycle, withstanding in-pack freezing, distribution and baking, provided a finished, attractive retail pack, complying with food packaging regulations on odour and taint.

The excellent stacking performance of the corrugated board attracted ASDA, eliminating the product damage and double handling associated with the previous packaging methods and allowing the trays to be displayed directly on shelf, obviating the need for the store applied outer board sleeve previously used to protect the pack.

Manufactured at DS Smith Cartons plant in Neath the trays are offset printed in 6 colours directly onto the Cartonflute Lite material and erected on Kliklok lock form machines, a result of development between the two companies to provide the first European instance of Kliklok machinery lock forming microflute material.

DS Smith is an international group with a turnover of £1.4 billion and 104 manufacturing sites in Europe and the US. The group provides both a global and local service to its customers, supplying plastic and paperboard packaging and liquid dispensing solutions.
