The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is proposing to amend the voluntary nutrition labelling regulations by updating the names and the nutrition labelling values for the 20 most frequently consumed raw fruits, vegetables and fish in the United States.

The FDA has decided to take action because current regulations require the agency to publish proposed updates (or a notice that the data sets have not changed from the previous publication) at least every four years. The agency will also revise the guidelines for the voluntary nutrition labelling of raw fruits, vegetables and fish to make necessary changes resulting from the updated nutrition information and to provide further clarification of the guidelines.

The FDA hopes that availability of the updated nutrition labelling values in retail stores and on individually packaged raw produce and fish will enable consumers to make better purchasing decisions to meet their dietary needs.

Any comments on the proposal should be submitted to the FDA by 3 June 2002.
