The Food Ingredient Specialties business of Nestle USA, a subsidiary of European food company Nestle, voluntarily recalled 144,000 pounds of chicken base refrigerated products because the allergen whey protein was not listed on the label, the US government announced on Monday.

People with an allergy or severe sensitivity to whey protein could have allergic reactions to the chicken base, the US Food Safety Inspection Service said.

The recall involved "MINOR'S Chicken Base NO ADDED MSG" in one-half, one-pound and five-pound tubs. Each tub carried a date code beginning with 1323, 1337, 1351, 2014 or 2028 and had establishment code "P-316" inside the Agriculture Department inspection seal.

Tubs covered by the recall should be returned to the store where they were bought. A paste added to soups, sauces and gravies, the chicken base was made between 13 November and 8 February and was distributed to food service and retail club stores nationwide.
