Ecolab files food additive petition

Petition for antimicrobial agent on meat parts, trim, and organs.

Notice was given this week under the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that a food additive petition has been filed by US company Ecolab.

The petition proposes to amend the food additive regulations in Part 173 Secondary Direct Food Additives Permitted in Food for HumanConsumption (21 CFR part 173) to provide for the safe use of a mixture of peroxyacetic acid, octanoic acid, acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, peroxyoctanoic acid, and 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid as an antimicrobial agent on meat parts, trim and organs.

The potential environmental impactof this action is currently being reviewed by the Food and Drug Administration. If, based on its review, theagency finds that an environmental impact statement is not required and this petition results in a regulation, the finding will be published with the regulation in the Federal Register in accordance with 21 CFR 25.51(b).
