Cargill has sold 55,000 tonnes of Thai raw sugar to Russia, the world's top sugar importer, for January shipment at undisclosed prices, trade sources told Reuters on Thursday.

It would be the largest vessel to be loaded in the history of the Thai sugar trade, they added. Thailand is one of the world's major raw sugar suppliers.

The last time Cargill sold Thai raw sugar to Russia was some years ago, when it shipped 41,000 tonnes, trade sources added.

They said the American trading firm had bought the sugar from Thailand's 2001/02 (October-September) crop from mills including Kaset Thai, Mitr Phol, KSL and the Thai Sugar Trading Corp.

The vessel, Olympic Galaxy, is scheduled to leave port on Saturday, heading towards the Black Sea, the sources added.
