The European Commission has recently approved the use of new food ingredient trehalose as a novel food in the EU. This approval follows authorisation for use in the United States, Japan, Taiwan and Korea as well as positive evaluation by JECFA (Joint Expert Committee for Food Additives). Trehalose is a naturally occurring, non-reducing disaccharide. It is fully caloric and metabolised to glucose and is suited for products formulated to provide sustained energy. Trehalose is less than half as sweet as sucrose with lower cariogenicity and can be used in range of food and beverage products.
