The Australia New Zealand Food Authority (ANZFA) said three soy sauces remain barred from supermarket shelves, two under the Golden Mountain brand and one under the Wanjashan brand. According to ANZFA, tests showed they contained high levels of potentially toxic chloropropanols. "Following worrying test results from the United Kingdom earlier this year, we commissioned our own tests and are now in a position to clear all domestically-produced soy and oyster sauces and all but two brands of imported product," ANZFA Managing director Ian Lindenmayer said in a statement. In June 2001, the British Food Standards Agency found that certain brands of soy sauce imported from Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan contained 3-MCPD, a chemical that can cause cancer if taken daily. Some also contained 1,3-DCP, which experts advise should not be present at any level in food.
