In a reversal of previous research, a comprehensivestudy released on Wednesday shows that drinking green tea offers no protection againststomach cancer. The research team, led by Dr. Yoshitaka Tsubono of the Tohoku University GraduateSchool of Medicine in Japan, followed 26,000 men and women for 8 years and reported thatthere was no health benefit among those who drank large or small amounts of green tea. "Those who enjoy green tea as a beverage can continue to drink it, but there should be noexpectation that this practice will reduce the risk of gastric cancer," Drs. Takeshi Sano andMitsuru Sasako of the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo write in an accompanyingeditorial. The study and commentary are published in the March 1st issue of The NewEngland Journal of Medicine. Source: Reuters Health
