French supermarket giant Carrefour unveiled this week its first hypermarket inJapan, the South China Morning Post reports. The company plans to open another12 supermarkets in Japan by 2003. The French operator, which controls about5,300 outlets worldwide, believes there is enough demand to open another twohypermarkets next month - one at Machida, south of Tokyo, and another inOsaka. The cost of the first three stores runs to one billion francs (aboutHK$1.05 billion). Carrefour plans to have 95 stores in Asia by the end of thisyear, including 27 in China.
