US protein supplier Essentia has acquired Danish Scanflavour in a bid to increase its global presence.

Scanflavour claims to be one of the largest producers of functional proteins and ingredients derived from pork collagen.

Its GMO-free product range includes skin emulsions, fresh injections for meat juiciness, granules for water-binding and gels for soy substitution.

Ankeny-based Essentia said it was “a major strategic step” that would strengthen its position as a leading manufacturer of animal-based protein ingredients.

The company’s CEO and president, Asger Jacobsen, said the transaction reinforced its strategic focus on growing a global presence.

“With the strong complementary fit in regards to customer base, product range and technologies, we expect to capture several operational efficiencies, necessary to deliver sustainable and profitable growth. We have great respect for Scanflavour and the products they have developed,” he said.

The company said the acquisition will secure increased access to fast growing international protein markets.

Essentia Protein Solutions is owned by the US-based and family-owned company, the Lauridsen Group (LGI). LGI has seven protein extraction and carbohydrate fractionation companies in its business portfolio, which are active in the food, feed and pharmaceutical industries globally.

Previously, Danish emulsifier supplier Palsgaard was the majority shareholder of Scanflavour. It will continue to distribute products from Scanflavour to the dairy industry.

We look forward to working with Palsgaard to develop the dairy market with the newly developed products from Scanflavour,” added Jacobsen.

The acquisition, announced today, was effective on 1 June. Financial details were not disclosed.
