Children at a UK primary school have been sampling edible insects to mark National Insect Week 2012.

The 60 schoolkids from St Peter’s Primary School, Harrogate, and Markington Primary School in Yorkshire were served the meal worms by Lionel Strub, chef patron of the Mirabelle restaurant, Harrogate.

They were also treated to a talk by entomologist Peter Smithers from Plymouth University on ‘why eat insects. Who does this and why?’

“This is a great event for the children and a novel way for them to learn more about our Great British insects,” said Dr Luke Tilley, National Insect Week coordinator. “National Insect Week is all about promoting awareness of the value of a diverse insect world to the environment.”

€2.7m has been invested in an EU project to promote eating insects and a three-year study by the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality continues.
