Russia has imposted a complete ban on foods from the EU, US, Australia, Canada and Norway, say Russian media.

The Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has announced a complete ban on the import of beef, pork, fruit, poultry, cheeses and milk from the EU, US, Australia, Canada and Norway, according to Russian media.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has announced that he had signed a decree introducing a ‘full embargo’ on a number of categories of food from the EU, US, Australia, Canada and Norway.

"Pursuant to the decree of the president, I have signed a government decree. Russia imposes a total ban on the supply of beef, pork, fruits and vegetables … poultry, fish, cheese, milk and dairy products," said Medvedev this morning.

“In fact, we are talking about an embargo on imports of whole categories of products from those countries that have imposed economic sanctions on Russian organizations and citizens,” the PM added.

Russia is Europe's second-largest market for food and drink export and has been an important consumer of Polish pig meat and Dutch fruit and vegetables. Exports of food and raw materials to Russia were worth €12.2bn (£9.7bn) in 2013, following several years of double-digit growth.

According to Russian media sources the embargo comes in response to the actions of the West and will last one year, but does not cover baby food or products that people buy while abroad in the countries affected by the import ban.

While the ban has been initially penned for one year, Medvedev also conceded that “if our partners demonstrate a constructive approach on cooperation, the Russian government is ready to revise the terms of those measures.”

"All of these measures, which I have just said, are extremely reactive. These developments, we do not want", said Medvedev at a government meeting.

The full decree can be found here (in Russian), while a summary of the decree in English, and full list of the foods categories affected by the ban, can be found below:

Russia among the few non-puppet major powers left

IT appears that Russia is about the only significant world power left, that is not a puppet.

Political hysteria is spreading

It makes me very sad to see how the political hysteria catalyzed by the dirty-mouth and eager for the world domination politicians is spreading into the areas of human activity which are, at first look, very distant from all these political dirt. The salivating sarcasm of overwhelmingly Russophobic comments indicate these individuals not even reading the article, which quoted the words of the Russia's Prime Minister who emphasized this embargo being a reciprocal action, in response to the attempt of the U.S. and EU dirty politicians to muscle Russia on the political arena. As for the food industry and business development in Russia, I am watching them with great interest: Mr. Putin clearly indicated his "no GMO" position...
