European canned fish company Karavela has developed Fish Peas, a new plant-based brand offering a canned alternative seafood range made from yellow peas. The company said the line was launched in response to growing demand for sustainable diets.
The brand was developed following more than a year of 'in-depth' market research and an investment of around €2.5m, the company said. The development process saw Karavela experiment with more than a hundred different recipes. The line consists of salads, spreads and flakes.
The products carry labels highlighting that they are clean label, gluten free, allergen free and non-GMO. This 'means that products are very healthy', the company suggested.
"Currently, there is a lack of understanding about how plant-based seafood products should taste. We are planning to change that, combining our extensive experience as a canned fish producer with sustainable innovation in the realm of plant-based ingredients. With the launch of our vegan products, we plan to become trendsetters in the plant-based fish product market leading the way for other brands that want to create new vegan products and tastes," said Andris Bite, CEO of Karavela.
