Bühler will create a Consumer Foods segment in January 2019 combining its chocolate, nuts, bakery and coffee business with Haas, which it acquired last year.

Haas, based in Vienna, makes production systems for wafers, hard and soft cookies, ice cones, cakes, and bakery products.

Bühler specializes in equipment for chocolate mass and end products and said it was the first time it had diversified into wafer and biscuit production.

Markus Reber, media relations manager, Bühler, told ConfectioneryNews, as of now, Bühler has a business area Consumer Foods within its business Grains & Food, covering bakery & ingredient handling, cocoa, nuts and chocolate mass, coffee processing and confectionery.

With Haas bringing in wafer and biscuit production capability, Consumer Foods will operate as a newly created segment, equal to the existing Grains & Food and Advanced Materials businesses.

This means Bühler will operate with three businesses (Grains & Food, Consumer Foods, and Advanced Materials) instead of two and the Consumer Foods segment will be led by Germar Wacker, CEO, Haas, who will also join Bühler’s Executive Board.

With this move, we can create significant value for our customers and position ourselves as a leader in the growing consumer foods market,” said Stefan Scheiber, CEO, Bühler.

He added the creation of the business segment is a milestone in the company’s 150-year history and in the past it has operated two businesses, Advanced Materials and Grains & Food.

The Consumer Foods business will focus on technology to produce wafers, biscuits, baked goods, chocolate, pralines, filled products, nuts, coffee, among others.

Remarkable results

Scheiber said its acquisition of Haas has already ‘showed remarkable results in a very short time’ and the two companies serve many joint customers together and it now wants to serve customers from one single point of origin.

With this new, strong business pillar in the field of processing technologies in consumer foods, we can offer specialized knowledge as well as research and development to the needs of our customers in that sector,” added Wacker.

The Haas Group employs 1,750 people and has factories in six countries with €300m ($357m) in annual revenues.
