Nuts in beer
A walk around the expo floor showed manufacturers pushing the boundaries in categories where nuts can be added.
Golden Peanuts & Tree Nuts was exhibiting a peanut-based porter ale made by a North Carolina brewery using its peanut flour and double barley.
"The peanut flour is used to add a flavour instead of hops," said Ali Hill, director of brand strategy and business development.
Golden grows peanuts in the south-west regions of the US and supplies manufacturers worldwide.
Its partially defatted peanut flour is available with a 12% or 28% fat content and as light, medium or dark roast. Whole peanuts typically contain around 50% fat.
“The flours have an all-natural provenance. All we do is press the peanuts to remove the oil,” added Hill.
