Food Safety Recall round-up 5-11 January 2018
Chlorate in infant food
Austria: dm drogerie markt has recalled infant food due to residues of a chlorine-containing cleaning agent being found in a jar.
Babylove Erdbeere & Himbeere in Apfel 190g with date 5.7.2019 is affected.
The firm said chlorate may be present in food due to use of chlorinated water in food processing or disinfection of equipment.
Acute exposure – a high intake on a single day could be toxic as it can limit the blood’s ability to absorb oxygen, leading to kidney failure, according to EFSA.
The agency set a recommended safe intake level for a daily intake (‘acute reference dose’) of 36 µg/kg of body weight per day in 2015.
Chlorate was found in 28.9 mg/kg - ppm in the infant food with fruit from Italy, according to the RASFF portal.
It was also distributed to Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and Slovakia.
