Chaga mushroom, green banana flour and cascara: The ingredients to watch in 2018

Chaga mushroom, green banana flour, hemp and blue spirulina: These are the ingredients to watch in 2018, according to market researchers at Mintel.

There are over-arching macro-trends that pull all these individual diets together which could give them longevity, food science analyst Emma Schofield told FoodNavigator at Food Ingredients Europe in Frankfurt last week.

“Naturalness and clean label, and once-niche diets like free-from and plant-based, are now mainstreaming. Protein such as hemp fits into the plant-based movement as well as being natural and free-from.”

“Ingredients that are artificial or heavily processed are being phased out of more and more different types of product that target more and more types of consumer. That means that naturalness is here to stay and, as a consequence, lots of these ingredients will move into more mainstream areas.”
