3-MCPD and glycidyl fatty acid esters
Austria: Medis has recalled Novalac 1 Infant formula 800g and Novalac CC Infant formula 400g due to 3-monochlor-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) presence making it unfit for consumption.
Novalac 1 Infant Milk Food 800g batch 9828301 with date 1.9.2019 and Novalac CC Infant Milk Food 400g batch 45405 with date 23.9.2018 are affected.
The content of glycidyl fatty acid esters was found at 0.421 mg/kg - ppm during an analysis. Products were made by UP Medi-Europa in Germany and/or France.
The European Commission has not set maximum levels for glycidyl fatty acid esters in infant formulas.
The compound 3-MCPD is a process contaminant formed during production of refined vegetable oils and fat and may be harmful to the kidneys. Babies are exposed to almost ten times the acceptable levels, according to the European Food Safety Authority.
