Superfood souperfoods
If you think Soupologie’s ingredient list sounds like it’s trying to pack in as many so-called superfoods as possible then you’re right.
It’s a trend that has come from across the Atlantic – “US consumers are looking for soup products that are nutritionally dense, [and] superfood ingredients and positioning communicate that soups deliver maximum nutritional value,” said Witham – and is influencing European manufacturers.
US manufacturer H-E-B launched a sea-buckthorn, apricot and apple cold soup in its Souper Fruit range which has “a light sour rustic berry note and an apricot and sweet apple finish”.
“Meanwhile [Soupologie’s] health claims include highlighting it contains two portions of the five recommended daily fruit and vegetable targets, and it features dairy-free, GMO-free, gluten-free and vegan claims. It is also high in fibre and a source of vitamins A, E and C, thiamine, folic acid, potassium, phosphorus and manganese,” the Mintel analyst added.
