Fresh Strips in SPIE Startup Challenge

A start-up focussed on improving food safety and reducing waste has been selected as a finalist in the 2017 SPIE Startup Challenge.

FreshStrips has developed a 'time temperature integrator'​ in the form of a plastic sticker attached to packaging to indicate if food has been exposed to unsafe temperatures.

Whenever the food is subject to excessive heat the Fresh Strip changes colour from green to red indicating it is no longer edible.

The firm will pitch their light-based technology business plans to a panel of judges during SPIE Photonics West.

The technology platform can be modified to measure pH, CO2​ and other mitigating factors for product quality.

Pitches will take place 31 January in the Park Central Hotel in San Francisco. The top six presenters will move on to the final round on 1 February in the Moscone Center.

Jenoptik is sponsoring a cash prize of $10,000 for first place, $5,000 for second and $2,500 for third. First-place will also receive $5,000 worth of products from Edmund Optics.

FreshStrips’ collaborators include Ernst & Young, Merck, TU/Eindhoven and HighTechXL.
