Food safety recall round-up 19-25 August 2016
Beef recalled due to contamination
US: Green Bay Dressed Beef, doing business as American Foods Group, is recalling 7,420 pounds of beef that may be contaminated with specified risk materials (SRMs).
The beef brains were produced between April 24 and August 11, said the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS).
FSIS defines Specified risk material (SRMs) as “tissues in cattle that are considered to be of high risk for prion contamination. Prions are thought to be the cause of a group of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) which are diseases of the brain”.
15-unit cases containing beef brains labeled “AMERICAN FOODS GROUP BEEF BRAINS <30” and packaging code 06400 were shipped to a distributor in California.
The problem was discovered by FSIS inspectors but there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions or injuries.
It is a Class II recall, meaning there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the product.
