Progress on food safety control systems and consumer protection was the subject of a conference in Georgia.

It brought together European, Georgian and Moldovan experts who looked at the progress of the Association Agreements (AA) signed with the EU.

The event also looked at risk assessment in the sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) field and cooperation between public institutions working on food safety and consumer protection issues.

Challenges and opportunities from the SPS reforms were outlined by conference speakers from the European Commission, European Food Safety Authority, Food and Agriculture Organization and Estonian Dairy Association.

Georgia and Moldova are implementing reforms to match its SPS legislation and practices with those of the EU.

The AAs and the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) brought about legal and economic reforms to bring the two countries closer to Europe.

The conference was part of a project funded by the EU and Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and organised by the Europe Foundation in Georgia.
