Food safety recall round-up 29 July - 4 August 2016
Histamine levels in fish
Canada: La Poissonnerie Cowie is recalling Blue Marlin and Vegetables Skewers due to elevated levels of histamine.
Individual 180g blue marlin and vegetables skewers were sold at retail fresh, marinated, unlabelled, and in bulk without the original packaging. Some 4x900g skewers are also affected. The retail level recall is nationwide.
The recall was triggered by consumer complaints and there have been reported illnesses associated with eating the blue marlin used to make the products but the the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) did not say how many.
Initially, Sea Delight Canada SLU recalled Sea Delight brand Blue Marlin Loins due to high histamine levels and the CFIA said it was investigating which may lead to the recall of other products.
Histamines are not destroyed by cooking. High levels in fish can cause an allergic-type reaction known as scombroid poisoning.
