Consumers: What’s their beef with meat?
On the one hand there’s growing criticism of meat. The International Agency for Research on Cancer’s finding that consumption of processed meats is “carcinogenic to humans” was a bitter blow (and the sensationalist headlines made the criticism even harder to swallow).
When it comes to climate change, the punches are coming harder and faster too. Livestock consumption is on a par with transport and energy when it comes to greenhouse gas emissions; to plug the gap between current commitments and actually achieving the targets agreed in Paris last December Europeans will need to consume less meat.
