A blow for English food is a boost for the Mediterranean
Giacomo Castelvetro, an Italian intellectual was exiled from Italy and sent to Britain in 1600s during the Venice Inquisition.
Horrified by English cooking – typified by large portions of meat, salt and very few fresh vegetables - he wrote a book on growing seasonal fruit and vegetables and how best to cook them.
The Fruit, Herbs and Vegetables of Italy is still in print today.
