Canada welfare changes
In April, GlobalMeatNews revealed that the Canadian pork industry could have lost in the region of CA$1.7bn annually, over the next 15 years, had the decision not been made to move away from the use of gestation crates for sows. The claims were made by animal welfare group Humane Society International (HSI) Canada, and followed the publishing of the new Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs in March. From 1 July 2014, any factories built or renovated are required to use group housing systems for pregnant sows.
