Dr Elis Owens and Ian Bessell from Birko have been named to the Produce Marketing Association (PMA) Science and Technology Committee.

Owens and Bessell will join the committee on October 16 during the PMA Fresh Summit Convention in Anaheim, California.

Owens is Birko’s senior chemist / microbiologist and active in developing its antimicrobial product line and attendant delivery systems. He has been a presenter at PMA Fresh Summit.

Bessell is Birko’s director of business development and food safety for produce. He also serves on United Fresh Produce Association’s Food Safety and Technology Council.

Kelly Green, Birko’s third-generation owner and chairman of the board, said the pair would make a strong contribution to the committee.

“They each have in-depth knowledge of the challenges produce processors face and they’ll provide an important perspective.”

Owens was also recently named to the Center for Produce Safety (CPS) Technical Committee.

Birko’s senior microbiologist/chemist served as an ad hoc member of the 2014 grant application and review cycle for CPS.

He oversees field trials at customer plants, works with university research partners and outside labs and acts as a government liaison for antimicrobial approvals.
