An ingredients firm has reported a dramatic increase in sales of its organic products for the third year running.

EHL Ingredients said sales of its dried organic beans, including chickpeas, haricot beans and red kidney beans, had increased by 10% compared with the same period last year.

Rising consumer interest in Middle Eastern, Mexican and Indian dishes, which included soups, stews, tagines and curries, had helped boost sales, it said.

Sales of organic pumpkin and sunflower seeds had also risen by 5% year-on-year, as a result of an increase in use by bakery manufacturers.

‘Notable increase’

“For the third year running, we have seen a notable increase in the sales of our organic products, following a dip in sales as a result of the recession,” said Tasneem Backhouse, EHL sales director.

The increase in sales was also put down to consumer interest in healthier foods, as well as their awareness and increasing education about the benefits of organic food, she added.
