The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) has launched a Europe-wide campaign, called ‘Where is my meat from?’.

It claimed that, following horsegate, European consumers’ confidence in where their meat was from had hit rock bottom, and that they were increasingly interested in knowing more about its origins and how it was produced.

The three-part campaign, launched by the BEUC alongside member organisations from 14 different countries, will initially focus on calling for mandatory country-of-origin labelling (COOL). It will also aim to prevent the misuse and overuse of antibiotics in livestock, and push for what it calls "honest meat labels".

"As transparency is the basis of a trusting relationship, we believe making the meat supply chain more transparent is crucial to the restoration of consumers’ lost confidence in meat," said the BEUC.
