Monday 23, education hot picks: HPP, insect protein, GMOs, Nutrition Facts and megasonics
Mon 23: Monday’s education timetable is jam-packed with sessions covering every topic from caffeine to nanotechnology. For a full listing, click HERE but here are a few hot picks:
8.30-10am: Advances in high pressure processing (HPP) - Room 292
High Pressure Processing (HPP) allows products to be treated in their final packaging, with flexible containers carrying the product into a high-pressure chamber, which is flooded with cold water and pressurized.
The pressure causes lethal damage to the cellular structure of bacteria, molds and yeasts, but maintain colors, textures, flavors and nutrients that can be damaged by heat treatment, enabling firms to significantly increase the shelf-life of products and retain their ‘clean-label’ credentials by avoiding additives. This session will keep you up to date with the latest developments.
8.30-10am: Anticipating FDA proposed changes to Nutrition Facts labels - Room 395
Find out what proposed changes to the Nutrition Facts panel will mean for your labels.
8.30-10am: Applications of innovative processing technologies for manufacturing novel ingredients - Room 393
This much-anticipated session will explore the latest advances in processing technologies for the manufacture of novel ingredients including shock waves for extraction and product modification; HPP for structure modification; High frequency ultrasonics (megasonics) for structure modification and particle separation; and novel membrane technologies for efficient separation.
8.30-10am: Perspectives on the GMO debate - Room 293-4
Get a fresh perspective on the GMO debate from John Ruff, a past-president of IFT, and journalist Josh Schonwald.
8.30-10am: The buzz on caffeine- Room 388-9
This session will provide an overview of the health issues surrounding caffeine consumption and a summary of approaches being taken by affected industries to reassure consumers and regulators.
10-30am-12pm: Millennials: What's on their plate? Room 393
Is your R&D team ready to meet the needs of this complex generation of consumers? Find out in this panel debate.
10-30am-12pm: A deeper look into the post-trans fat world - Room 283-5
The FDA has proposed to revoke the GRAS status of partially hydrogenated oils. But what does this mean for industry?
1.30-3pm: Real Pioneers: Experience with insect ingredients, processing, products, and marketing - Room 394 (there is also a second session on Tues 24 at 10.30am in room 295)
Hear from the insect protein pioneers!
