The Irish Kepak Group is acquiring a majority shareholding in Cavan-based pigmeat processor McCarren and Co, subject to approval by the Competition Authority, as part of its strategy to develop sales in domestic and EU retail and foodservice markets.

McCarren and Co is a fifth-generation business, and one of the oldest traditional bacon and pork processors in the Republic of Ireland, with a staff of 180 workers.

The McCarren family will remain a minority shareholder in the business, and has welcomed the acquisition as putting the future of the business on a secure footing.
