Germany’s Green Party has sparked anger by calling for a meat-free day in the country’s canteens.

The party’s manifesto for the September elections claimed that the country, which consumes 60kg of meat per capita annually, must reduce its consumption for health and the environment. It called on public sector cafeterias to ban meat once a week, with the model eventually rolled out across schools and private canteens.

Green Party leader Renate Kuenast told German newspaper Bild on Monday that: “A veggie day is a wonderful day to try to find out how we can feed ourselves without meat and sausages, for once.”

However, the move has been ridiculed by the German media and opposition parties, with even the Green Party’s political allies, the SPD, distancing themselves from the proposal.
