The former president of McDonald’s Europe has been appointed as the burger giant’s global chief brand officer and executive vice-president.

Steve Easterbrook, who worked for McDonald’s for 18 years before leaving to join Pizza Express in 2011, will be responsible for the company’s global marketing, menu development and consumer and business insights. He takes over from Kevin Newell, who has moved to McDonald’s USA.

Easterbrook became CEO of McDonald’s UK in 2006, before taking over responsibility for Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Ireland and eventually heading up the company’s European operations.

McDonald’s president and CEO Don Thompson said: “Steve has demonstrated dynamic leadership and creative thinking within the restaurant industry and throughout his previous career at McDonald’s,” Thompson said. “I’m thrilled to welcome him back to the Golden Arches and am confident that, with his expertise, we will reach customers in new and innovative ways.”

Easterbrook, who most recently held the position of CEO of Wagamamas, said: “I’m excited to return to McDonald’s and lead a talented team at one of the world’s most iconic brands. I look forward to engaging customers in new brand experiences while driving the business.”
