2013 Humane Slaughter Award open for entries
The Humane Slaughter Association’s (HSA’s) annual award seeks to celebrate the work that is being carried out to improve the welfare of the millions of farmed livestock slaughtered around the world each day.
It is open to individuals and organisations anywhere in the world, which have contributed towards advances in science, research and technology that have led to, or are leading to, advances in human slaughter of farmed animals, including ruminants, pigs, poultry and fish.
Both direct applications and third party nominations are welcomed, with an award of £1,000 for the winner. The deadline for applications is 14 December 2012 and application forms can be downloaded from www.hsa.org.uk.
Last year’s award was won by the Stunning and Slaughter Group at the University of Bristol’s School of Veterinary Sciences, which was judged to have made major contributions to the science behind human livestock slaughter. The group spent 15 years researching the design and operation of poultry water-bath stunners and developed controlled atmosphere (CA) systems, which are a more human alternative to the multi-bird electrical water-bath stunner.
The HSA is a registered charity which works towards improving livestock welfare at markets, during transport and at slaughter, through advances in science and technology, education and training. In addition to researching and developing humane slaughter methods, it produces guidelines and best practice for industry and funds research projects.
