German meat production up 1.5%
German meat production went up 1.5% or 119,000 tonnes in 2011, reaching 8.2m tonnes (mt), the German Meat Association (VDF) has revealed.
The organisation said the rise was due to enhanced pork and poultry meat production, and noted a decline in beef production.
With over 5.6mt, pigmeat production increased by 2%, largely due to a 1.5% rise in numbers and a 2.8% rise in slaughterings of domestic pigs. “The number of pigs fattened abroad, but slaughtered in Germany decreased by 11.9% (-623,100 animals),” VDF added.
As cattle slaughterings dropped by 2%, beef production went down 2.7% to 1.2mt in 2011.
Poultry meat production experienced a 3.1% increase to 1.4mt. VDF said: “This accounted for a broiler meat production growth of 6.3% to 853,600 tonnes.”
Pork represented 68.1% of overall meat production in 2011, followed by poultry (17.4%) and beef (14.2%), the association added.
