Kantar Worldpanel communications director Ed Garner talks about the impact of the recession and the 2012 outlook for major UK supermarkets.

UK citizens are cutting their going-out budget, giving supermarkets an opportunity to capitalise on premium goods. "Your value perception of what you put on the table for a family meal is quite different if it’s placed in competition against eating out or against cheap stuff at another supermarket," Garner says. Retailers cannot differentiate themselves on price anymore, and need to offer quality goods and service to satisfy their clientele.

Supermarkets have an important role to play in the meat industry, and can improve sales with promotion and advertising campaigns as well as traditional meat counters.
