USDA says Food 2030 vision is short on detail

The USDA has described the Food 2030 report as ambitious in its vision for a secure and sustainable food supply but short on detail on how to achieve that goal.

Giving the USDA verdict on Food 2030, Jennifer Wilson said the UK is seeking global leadership on food security and has delivered bold statements on contentious issues like product labelling and agricultural biotechnology.

But Wilson said the policy document is short on detail and relies very much on all stakeholders working together to establish long-term food security. In particular, the UK government has put a strong accent on “people power”, assuming that consumer demand will reward industry and government investment.

Wilson said this has been the referred approach to food policy in the UK and it is unlikely to change as competition for ever smaller public funds increases across government departments.
