Glanbia cuts back on 50 jobs

Irish food firm Glanbia has announced that it is cutting 50 jobs from its Consumer Foods division, so as to reduce costs and cope better with the tough economic environment.

The majority of jobs will go from the head office in City West, Dublin. Redundancy terms are to be discussed with unions, but it is understood that the firm will try to make the job cuts on a voluntary basis in the first instance.

CEO of the division Colin Gordon said the cuts will "create a simplified, more agile and lower cost structure that will underpin future growth and competitiveness". The field sales team is also to be restructured.

Glanbia issued a warning earlier this month that the economic crisis is lowering demand for dairy products – and that is expected to have an impact on operations this year.
