Dame Suzi Leather has been appointed as chair the UK’s new Council of Food Policy Advisers, which is briefed to provide advice and practical recommendations, and consider policy impact.

Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs Hilary Benn, who announced the formation of the council last month, said Dame Suzi has “a long interest in food policy and brings with her a wealth of experience of leading high profile public bodies such as the Food Standards Agency and the School Food Trust”.

The council is being set up for an initial two years, and will be subject to a review after 18 months. Depending on the review outcome, a decision will be taken then as to whether a permanent council is needed.

Dame Suzi will not be remunerated for her role as chair of the council; she will continue in her existing role as chair of the Charity Commission as well.

Details of the appointment process and selection criteria have been published by Defra.
