Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmer's Union, said this
week that the era of "cheap food on world markets is coming to an
end", and predicted a golden future for Britain's agricultural

Kendall told attendees at Wednesday evening's National Farming Awards dinner that he was convinced that a combination of growing wealth in China and India, climate change reducing production, and huge increases in renewable energy production will "draw the curtain on an era of cheap world food."

"I am also convinced production agriculture will be more and more important to this country," he said.

"I am not advocating an all out pursuit of production at the expense of the landscape or the environment. We must farm with sensitivity to our footprint. But we can do that. We can find smart solutions that enable us to farm while improving our environmental performance."

Kendall and the NFU also welcomed the announcement from DEFRA that there would be a radical shake up of the statutory levy board structure in the UK.

"I am delighted Defra is giving the industry the opportunity to develop a new levy board structure in the UK. I believe the new framework outlined today should allow us to address the 'market failure' issues in the agriculture and horticulture sectors.

"The industry must now make full use of the opportunity presented by the Government to engage in the restructuring process and make sure the levy bodies add value to the business of farming and growing in the UK."

The NFU is the largest trade association in the UK representing British farmers.
