The legal issues encountered during local authority food safety investigations are tackled in a new publication, 'Food SafetyEnforcement' compiled by a group of barristers.

Launched this week by Chadwick House Publishing, the book has been written by a trio of barristers and is designed to assist individuals involved in the implementation of food safety regulations. The publication takes a look at local authority investigative powers and considers the service and enforcement of improvement notices and ordersunder food safety legislation. The specific difficulties food safety enforcers face, including the collection of admissible court evidence, advance disclosure and establishing a due diligence defence are also covered.

Guidance is given on preparing cases for court as well as on the conduct of hearings. The authors, Rosalind Malcolm, John Pointing and Leslie Blake, are all lawyers with specialist knowledge of food safety enforcement cases. The publication aims to address the complexities of the legal system that affect local authority enforcement bodies.
