Oxoid, the UK-based food safety specialist, has had its Staphytect and Dryspot Staphytect test kits successfully evaluated under the European Microbiological Methods Assessment.

In the past, the testing of new methods has been undertaken by theindividual laboratories wishing to use them. This obviously resulted inconsiderable time taken, and duplication of large amounts of data.

EMMAS wasintroduced to provide manufacturers with a system for the assessment of newmethods, but also to provide the food industry with a source of informationon the performance of new test kits. The final EMMAS report provides detailsof sensitivity, specificity and comparison to standard methods, along withother practical information such as additional requirements and cost per test.

Oxoid's Staphytect Plus and Dryspot Staphytect Plus were compared with theTube Coagulase method, on presumptive colonies isolated from a range of foodsamples including dairy products, raw meats, salads and vegetable, eggs, ready meals, sandwiches and hand swabs.

The Oxoid kits showed very high levels of both sensitivity (98 per cent) andspecificity (97 per cent) as well as offering the advantage of producing confirmedresults 24-48 hours earlier than the standard Tube Coagulase method. According to Oxoid, all thelaboratories reported the kits were easy to use and the reactions were clearto interpret.
