Academics are worried that Thailand will not be ready for the introduction of a programme for the labelling of genetically modified (GM) food, scheduled for next year, writes Thai newspaper The Nation this week.
Dr Somwong Trakulroong of the Science Ministry's National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (Biotec) said there might not be enough time.
"Based on Japan's experience of labelling - the model for the Thai system - there will be many problems after implementation," he said.
The story continues that the Ministry of Public Health has scheduled to begin the labelling measure next May. The ruling will apply to all food products that contain more than 5 per cent of GM corn or GM soybean.
Kasetsart University's Dr Banphote Na Pomphet said that without a proper inspection system, the GM labelling programme would repeat the mistakes with the labelling of organic food, which was still facing problems.
