The Covent Garden fresh soup plant in Modesto, US has closed down, laying off most of its 25 employees, Bee paper reports. The move was part of a company restructuring under way in the United Kingdom, said plant manager Dennis Wilson. Wilson said he hoped the plant would be able to reopen once the restructuring is completed. Wilson said financial support for the Modesto operation came to a halt as stockholders in the parent company in the United Kingdom consider a bid by an investor to acquire the company. Sales of the fresh soups have been good and sales volume has doubled in the past year, Wilson said. The Covent Garden plant opened in Modesto more than two years ago. The fresh soups used a variety of local products, from produce and dairy products to olive oil.
