The American company Spherix providing innovations in biotechnology, formerly known as Biospherics Incorporated, announced on July 2 that the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has recommended tagatose, the company's new low-calorie sweetener, for use as a food additive. Recently declared Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) in the US under the Food & Drug Administration regulations, tagatose is now eligible to enter the world market. Tagatose​ is a naturally occurring, low-calorie sugar that has the full bulk of table sugar. It can be used in food products, such as baked goods, chocolate candy and other confectionaries, ice cream and other desserts where the requirement for bulk is not met by the high-intensity sweeteners. Found in nature only sparingly, tagatose is made from whey by a process invented by Spherix, owner of the basic use patents on the product. Unlike table sugar, tagatose does not promote tooth decay, which could enhance its use in foods and sodas. It also has prebiotic properties that promote healthy digestion, making it useful in functional food applications, such as health bars and other health foods and drinks. And because it does not cause a rise in blood sugar, the new sweetener is safe for use by people with diabetes. Spherix​ licensed the food use of tagatose and its manufacturing process to MD Foods of Denmark. Last year, that company merged with Arla Foods, now constituting the world's second largest volume producer of milk. The enormous amounts of whey produced by the company's cheese plants will become the raw material for tagatose. Henrik Andersen, Project Director for Arla, said, "JECFA's action recommending our desired uses of tagatose in each of the products requested, together with tagatose's recent determination as GRAS in the U.S., adds another important milestone on our way to market."Source: Spherix
