Dole Food Co., the largest U.S. fresh fruit and vegetable producer, on Monday forecast improved second quarter earnings benefiting from cost cutting measures. Dole estimated its second-quarter net income will be in the range of $34 million to $37 million, or 61 cents to 66 cents per share. This estimate includes an $8 million pretax gain related to the sale of investments and about $30 million of pretax expense primarily related to asset write-downs resulting from actions taken in the first part of 2001. Analysts had estimated Dole's​ second quarter earnings from ongoing operations in a range of 58 cents to 60 cents a share with a mean at 59 cents, according to market research firm Thomson Financial/First Call.
