US e-commerce sales for the first quarter of 2001 are estimated to have hit $6.994 billion, an increase of 33.5 per cent from the same period last year, the US Department of Commerce announced this week. But the apparently glowing figures are less impressive when compared to the fourth quarter of 2000. In fact the first quarter 2001 e-commerce estimate showed a decrease of 19.3 per cent (± 2.6%) from the fourth quarter of 2000 while total retail sales were down 10.6 per cent (± 0.4%) from the prior quarter. E-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2001 accounted for 0.9 per cent of total sales compared to 1.0 percent in the fourth quarter of 2000. E-commerce sales were 0.7 percent of total sales in the first quarter of 2000. Source: Census Bureau
