Organic agricultural exports in New Zealand are expected to total around NZ$ 64 million (US$ 26.9 million) this year, according to a new report on organic food. The report states that for the year to March 31, organic produce accounted for just 0.5 per cent of total agricultural exports. However, it adds that the sector is growing at about 50 per cent a year with annual receipts projected to reach NZ$ 500 million (US$ 210 million) in the next few years. 'Organics: New Opportunities for the Future' claimed New Zealand is well placed to capitalise on the global consumer trend for organic produce, given the methods commonly employed in food production in the country. It added that the sector will need to improve financial returns during conversion to organic production and increase access for producers to technical information and advisory services. The report also recommends that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry collate marketplace data and product information. Fresh produce is the predominant organic export from New Zealand.
